Exertion + Recovery

Program: Dance Center and Bath House
Project Location: Syracuse, New York
Collaborators: Chloe Cheng
Date: Spring 2026

This Dance Center and Bath House is organized as a whole-body institution of exertion and recovery. The bath house on the first floor supports thermal, sensory, and social recovery, while the dance center above houses spaces of movement, endurance, training, and performance. Their vertical separation creates a measured interval between labor and restoration, defining recovery as spatial, bodily, and temporal.

A steel structural system allows the building to remain open and permeable, using minimal columns and long spans to support flexible interior programs. Along the exterior, a continuous Warren truss expresses the building’s structural logic and can be seen and experienced from within, while the open ground plane allows the landscape to pass under the building and shape a more public, porous base.
